Located to the east of Africa, Mauritius is a jewel in the Indian Ocean, with its heavenly beaches, tropical jungle and rich culture. If your vacation time allows, you can combine a visit to Mauritius with one to Reunion Island, just a 45-minute flight away! So what can you do in Mauritius? Here’s my itinerary for 2 weeks in Mauritius, with all my top tips and must-sees.

🛌 Where to sleep in Mauritius?

During my 2-week trip to Mauritius, I was able to try out several hotels all around the island. Here is my selection:

  • Bubble Lodge Île aux cerfs: this is clearly the atypical accommodation not to be missed if you’re coming as a couple. Indeed, there’s nothing more romantic than sleeping under the stars on an island “privatized” for the occasion. I say “privatized” because there are plenty of tourists during the day, but they desert the island from 5pm onwards. There are only 4 bubbles on the island, which are fairly far apart. Ideal for visiting Ile aux Cerfs in solitary mode early in the morning or for sunset. You’ll also have the chance to try your hand at one of Mauritius’s finest golf courses!
  • Constance Prince Maurice: located on the east coast, this hotel is renowned for its luxury and elegance. It’s the ideal establishment for a refined, peaceful interlude. Surrounded by pristine beaches and turquoise lagoons, it offers top-of-the-range suites and villas, delicate gastronomic experiences and exceptional service.
  • Veranda Tamarin: on the west side of the island, this 3* hotel is the equivalent of a 4* for me. It has beautiful rooms, two swimming pools, one of which is rooftop. What’s more, they’ve set up an Explorer Program, which lets you book activities or excursions. You’ll find, for example, a kayak outing to observe the dolphins, hikes and even catamaran outings.
  • Sugar Beach: ideally located for travelling from north to south if you don’t want to change hotels regularly. This 5* hotel is truly magnificent, with a beautiful beach. There are also plenty of activities throughout the day, great for younger guests. However, the hotel does have an appreciable adults-only swimming pool.
  • JW Marriott: I ended my stay in style at this sublime resort. The setting is magnificent, with beautiful sunsets on the beach and a breathtaking view of Le Morne. The catering is very varied and of high quality. There’s even a Teppanyaki experience on reservation. I’ve stayed in a lot of nice hotels, but this one has the best bedding I’ve ever had!

How to prepare your trip to Mauritius?

➡️ When to go to Mauritius?

Mauritius enjoys a fairly mild climate all year round (between 22 and 28 degrees Celsius), but I recommend that you leave between May and December. Winter is the driest season, and the weather is likely to be more clement for enjoying the paradise beaches.

➡️ Where to buy your plane ticket

We recommend that you compare the best offers and book your flights on Ulysse. You can save €10 on your first Ulysse flight booking by registering via our link!

💰What’s the budget for 15 days in Mauritius?

  • Flights France – Mauritius: €1,000 per person on average
  • Car rental: 200€ per week
  • Gasoline: €150
  • Hotels: 100€-500€ per night depending on the standard chosen
  • Restaurants: 30€ per day per person for 2 meals

Total for a balanced trip between luxury and mid-range hotels = €7,380 for a 2-week trip to Mauritius, i.e. €3,700 per person, excluding activities/tours.

But if you avoid expensive accommodation, you can get away with €4,500, or €2,250 per person.

Hiking Mauritius

➡️ How to get around Mauritius?

To find a car rental in Mauritius, compare prices on Discovercars. This comparator scans the entire market and gives you very low prices. They’re even cheaper than on direct rental sites. I found a great opportunity with an automatic gearbox 🚗 !

Mind you, in Mauritius, you drive on the left! Also bring an adapter for plugs, although most hotels will help you out.

➡️ Other information:

The local currency is the Mauritian rupee (MUR). 1€ corresponds to 50 rupees.

The two official languages are English and French, so don’t be surprised to see billboards in both languages.

I bought my SIM card at the airport (eSim possibility) for 20€ with unlimited data for 30 days ☎️.

🎫 Is it necessary to buy tickets online to visit the must-sees of Mauritius?

Indeed, for the price, to ensure availability and ease, we advise you to pre-book your activities on one of the following 3 sites:

Itinerary: What to do in Mauritius for 15 days?

To help you plan your road trip to Mauritius, I’ve put together a list of the must-sees in Mauritius. You’ll discover a complete itinerary for visiting Mauritius in 15 days.

Day 1: Relaxation and recuperation

It all depends on your flight’s arrival time, but you’ll be glad to settle into your hotel to recover from the long journey. You’re on a 2-week trip to Mauritius, so you’ll have plenty of time to visit the must-sees!

Landscape Mauritius

Day 2: Discover Île aux Cerfs

For your second day, head for the island’s east coast to discover one of Mauritius’s most beautiful islands, Ile aux Cerfs. It’s a small island paradise, and although it’s very touristy, it’s well worth the detour for its breathtaking scenery.

To get there, you can take a shuttle boat for a 15-20 minute trip. Shuttles usually start around 8:30 a.m. and end at 4 p.m., returning to Trou d’Eau Douce. I was overwhelmed by the beauty of the lagoon.

⛵️ You can also book a full-day boat trip, including lunch, to enjoy Ile aux Cerfs and snorkel in the lagoon. I advise you to book this trip with other must-see sites, to get the most out of your visit. The price is very reasonable and you’ll enjoy a barbecue and drinks included.

Paysage île aux Cerfs

Ile aux Cerfs Beach

This is a heavenly spot and one of the most beautiful beaches in my opinion, even if it is very crowded and often windy. There are plenty of activities on offer, including parasailing, kitesurfing, kayaking and pedal-boating.

Try your hand at golf

If you’re a golf enthusiast, you’ll be amazed by the beauty of the Ile aux Cerfs golf course. This 18-hole course, designed by a professional golfer, lets you combine leisure with incredible scenery. In fact, I was able to take part in an introductory course that allowed me to discover a little more about this sport ⛳️.

Where to stay on Île aux Cerfs?

As mentioned above, I recommend staying at the Bubble Lodge on Île aux Cerfs. I loved sleeping in these luxurious bubbles, in the heart of nature. Mind you, you’ll be awakened early by the sun, but make the most of the opportunity to walk around the island! It’s great to be on your own when the beaches are so crowded during the day.

Day 3: Relaxation on the east coast of Mauritius

Visit the village of Flacq

Every Wednesday and Sunday, you can visit a local market where you’ll find spices, fruit and vegetables, as well as rhum arrangé and souvenirs.

Relax at the Constance Prince Maurice

During your 2-week itinerary in Mauritius, you’ll be looking for a hotel where you can relax by the pool and enjoy a breathtaking view of the sea. The Constance Prince Maurice truly has exceptional charm. The hotel has 3 restaurants, one of which is located directly in the mangrove and features a floating bar. There are even villas on stilts (the only ones in Mauritius) with a magnificent view of the sea and mangroves. I was able to take advantage of the tennis courts and mini-golf, as well as the pool bar to enjoy a delicious cocktail while admiring the sunset. It’s a truly magnificent hotel, and I’d recommend it to you if you want to stay on the east coast.

Eglise Cap Malheureux

I know not everyone can afford this kind of hotel, you can also stay at the Eastern Blue Beachfront Luxury Apartment which is modern, beachfront and with a pool for excellent value 💰.

Days 4 and 5: Discovering Grand Baie

Take your car for a 1-hour drive to discover the northern part of Mauritius.

Grand Baie beach

If you’re looking for white sand and turquoise waters, you won’t be disappointed. This beach is accessible by bus, and you’ll find plenty of small stalls selling drinks and snacks. It’s a good opportunity to try out local foods such as Mine Frite (equivalent to fried noodles). On your way out, don’t hesitate to cross Sunset Boulevard, Grand Bay’s most popular shopping street.

Grand Bay Beach Mauritius

Cap Malheureux beach

This beach is recognizable by its little church with a red roof. I found it really cute and not too crowded.

Eglise Cap Malheureux

See the sunset at Peyrébère beach

A few kilometers from Grand Baie beach, you’ll find Peyrébère beach, much smaller and less touristy, but just as beautiful. I recommend that you go there for the sunset, which is grandiose!

Day 6: Visit the northern islands by catamaran

⛵️ For this 6th day of the Mauritius itinerary, I recommend a catamaran trip to discover the small islands to the north: Ile Plate and Ilot Gabriel. I left the port at 9am and we sailed for 1h30. Once on Ilot Gabriel, I took the opportunity to snorkel in the turquoise-blue lagoon. We then had lunch on the boat, washed down with a little rum, before returning to port mid-afternoon.

Catamaran îlot Gabriel

I did my outing with Blue Safari and everything went very well. I recommend booking in advance as some dates can fill up quickly.

You can also book a snorkeling trip with a glass-bottomed boat!

🍴 Where to dine / have a drink in Grand Baie ?

Mauritian cuisine is very varied and slightly similar to Indian cuisine. In particular, you’ll find specialties such as curries and rougails. I tried La Roulette Fast Food, on Mon Choisy beach, and it was excellent and good value for money!

Day 7: Discover Trou aux Biches and dive

Trou aux Biches beach

For me, this is undeniably one of the most beautiful beaches in the northwest! With its crystal-clear waters, fine sand and palm trees stretching for 3 km along the coast, it’s a paradise par excellence.

Diving excursion

If you’d like to discover the underwater world, I highly recommend a diving trip with Diving World. Whether you’re a beginner or not, dives are accessible to all levels. In particular, I was lucky enough to see turtles and rays, a real moment of communion with nature 🐢!

Day 8: Discover the north of the island

Pamplemousse Botanical Garden

The Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden dates back to the 18th century and is home to over 500 plant species, including giant water lilies and baobabs. You can book a guided tour on site. Allow 1 to 2 hours for your visit. It’s a very soothing place that I really enjoyed.

The garden opens at 8.30 a.m. and costs 300 Rs, or 6€.

Jardon Pamplemousse Mauritius

Visit to Port Louis

Of course, I wasn’t going to spend 2 weeks in Mauritius without discovering its capital. I recommend a visit to the central market at Queen Street, a kind of big bazaar, where you can sample local tropical fruits, buy spices and souvenirs.

I also recommend a visit to the Caudan Waterfront, a colonial-style shopping mall where you’ll find many small local stores. Right next door, the Blue Penny Museum traces the island’s history and Mauritian culture.

Discover the Labourdonnaie estate

A visit to a rum distillery is a must during your 2-week trip to Mauritius. I chose Labourdonnaie because it’s the most famous. What’s more, the history of the chateau is very interesting. They’ll explain how rum is made, and then you’ll be treated to a tasting! Be careful if you’re driving, as Mauritius only allows one glass.

You can visit the château and estate between 9am and 5pm. Admission is 350 Rs, or 7€ per person.

Labourdonnais Mauritius

🍴 Where to dine / have a drink

If there’s one restaurant on the island not to be missed, it’s L’Escale Créole. This restaurant opened 30 years ago in the garden of the manageress (who is adorable), and locals meet there regularly. Surrounded by vegetation, you can sample several Mauritian specialties from a choice of 6 dishes. This is a real “coup de coeur” for me, and an address not to be missed. Please note that the restaurant is only open for lunch on weekdays and is often fully booked, so book in advance.

Hotel Sugar Beach

Day 9: Discovering Flic en Flac

If you’re looking for a postcard setting, Flic en Flac beach is for me the most beautiful beach in Mauritius, stretching for 8 km. It’s also where I saw the most beautiful sunsets of my trip. There are plenty of hotels lining the beach, but it’s not too crowded compared to some of the northern beaches.

I recommend staying at Sugar Beach, which overlooks the lagoon and has a truly magnificent beach. The hotel offers a wide range of activities, from tennis and padel to beach volleyball and cricket, as well as DJ sets during sunset. I was also able to try out the main restaurant and the Italian restaurant, which were really delicious 🤤.

Hotel Sugar Beach

Day 10: Discover Ile aux Bénitiers on this 2-week itinerary in Mauritius

For this new day, I recommend a catamaran excursion to discover Ile aux Bénitiers. Located on the west coast, this uninhabited islet in the middle of the lagoon can be visited by day. It’s also the perfect opportunity to discover Crystal Rock, the famous wave-sculpted rock in the open sea. The spot is great for snorkeling, weather permitting… I recommend booking in advance. Departure is at around 9 a.m., then you sail to the islet, where you can enjoy the 2 km of beach for a few hours. This online-bookable outing gives you unlimited lunch and drinks (even cocktails, wine and beer!).

Alcohol is dangerous to your health and should be consumed in moderation.

3 Mammels Mauritius

In the evening, I recommend that you sleep in Tamarin to enjoy this very pleasant town. I loved the Veranda Tamarin, as it’s right across from the beach and close to the river of the same name. I recommend enjoying the sunset from the rooftop pool for the best view.

3 Mammels Mauritius

Day 11: Kayak trip to Tamarin

Le Veranda offers an Explorer Program, which allows you to visit Mauritius via several activities, such as boat outings, kayak trips, culinary discoveries or nature hikes.

In particular, I was able to try out the kayak excursion departing directly from the hotel beach. We were supposed to see the dolphins, but the sea conditions were too bad, so we took a trip on the Tamarin river! It was very soothing and I was even lucky enough to see some monkeys 🐒!

3 Mammels Mauritius

In the evening, I was able to watch a demonstration of sega, the typical Mauritian dance, around a campfire on the beach, while enjoying an aperitif offered by the hotel.

3 Mamelles hike

This hike is a must on any 2-week trip to Mauritius. It’s not the easiest to find, as there are no signs and you’ll have to cross a sugarcane field before finding your way back. Once on the trail, there are red markers to guide you, but I had a bit of trouble finding the start. I’ll give you the GPS coordinates for the starting point, but that’s about to change as there’s work going on at the moment.

The path is a little steep and you need to hold on tight to the surrounding trees as it can be a little slippery, but I made the ascent in 40 minutes. Once you reach the top, you’ll have a magnificent view of the entire west coast. You can also continue along the path to get the real view of the 3 Mamelles (the 3 passes), but you really mustn’t be afraid of heights, and I wouldn’t recommend it for children as it’s a bit dangerous.

3 Mammels Mauritius

Day 12 of Mauritius itinerary: Chamarel and the 7 colors

Head for Chamarel to discover one of the island’s must-sees: the Land of 7 Colors, made up of red, brown, purple, blue, green, yellow and orange sand dunes, the result of erosion of volcanic rock. I recommend starting with the magnificent waterfall at the entrance to the park. This is the highest waterfall in Mauritius, reaching a height of 100 m.

Entrance to the natural park with the waterfall and the Land of 7 Colors costs 500 rs, or 10€ per person. Open from 8.30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Chamarel and earth of 7 colors

On the way back, I stopped off at the panoramic Chamarel Restaurant, which offers a breathtaking view of the whole Black River bay. You can try their coffee and rum, while enjoying the view of Le Morne and Ile aux Bénitiers.

Chamarel Mauritius

Day 13: Morne hike

This is the most beautiful viewpoint on the island, but you have to earn it. The hike officially opens at 7am, but I managed to get in before then as the gate was open. It takes about 1h30 to get to the top, but the route is divided into 2 parts: a straightforward section that stops about halfway up, and a steeper section that almost ends in a climb. If you’re not comfortable with rock-climbing or are afraid of heights, I recommend stopping at the end of the1st section, which still offers a superb panorama.

Hiking Mauritius

Day 14: Discover the seabed

Swim with dolphins

For an experience as incredible as swimming with dolphins, I recommend choosing a private boat to avoid the crowds of tourists around you. The experience will be much more impressive and often more respectful of the animals. I’d recommend Karlos Excursions – they’ve been top-notch and are rated 4.9/5 on Google! Book on this number: +230 5726 5599. Say you’re from me and you’ll get a €10 discount.

Swim with dolphins

Seaplane – Underwater Waterfall

This is the most spectacular thing I’ve seen in Mauritius: an underwater waterfall. The different currents and coral reefs give the impression of an underwater waterfall. I chose a seaplane tour that gave an incredible overview of the lagoon. I advise you to book several weeks in advance, as there are many requests. The 15-minute flight is enough to see the waterfall, but if you have the budget, extend the happiness… It was crazy! 😍

Seaplane Mauritius

Day 15 of the 2-week Mauritius itinerary: 7 cascades hike

This hike is accessible to all levels, and you’ll be able to swim as you go. However, it’s not signposted at all, so I’d advise you to book the excursion with a guide, as you could easily get lost. What’s more, the terrain can be very slippery, so I wouldn’t recommend going in heavy rain.

For the more adventurous, this is the ideal place for canyoning. This service provider is highly rated!

Where to stay in the south of the island?

I’d like to recommend one of the most beautiful hotels I’ve stayed in on Mauritius, the Marriott JW. It’s located in the lagoon at the foot of Le Morne, and has 5 restaurants. If you’re looking for a hotel to spend your honeymoon, go for it with your eyes closed! You must take at least one day to relax in this hotel, so that you can take advantage of all the activities available (paddle, spa, tennis…).

Luxury hotel Mauritius

I even got to pop the champagne at sunset, a great way to celebrate a vacation in Mauritius! The restaurants were divine: the Teppanyaki is a real culinary show and it’s quite fun (tip: it’s very hot near the plate so don’t come overdressed!).
