Preparing your trip to Vietnam : my advice
Which insurance should you choose ?
To preparing your trip to Vietnam, let’s start with the most important thing: leaving with peace of mind! To date, you don’t need any specific travel insurance to go to Vietnam, but I would still advise you to take out insurance in case of a medical problem. Chapka offers plans adapted to the conditions in each country. Get a quote for your travel insurance in Asia.
We’re taking the liberty of talking about Chapka because it’s a reliable insurance company that we’ve been using for years (even before we became bloggers). We’ve been covered twice for hospitalisation abroad (Australia and Cambodia) and everything went very well.
When to go to Vietnam ?
The climate varies greatly between the north and south of the country !
☀️ In southern Vietnam, the best time to go is during the dry season, between December and April. Temperatures are generally quite high (between 30-35 degrees during the day).
☁️ In the north, temperatures are much cooler. During the dry season, temperatures are around 20 degrees in Hanoi. During the wet season (May-October), temperatures are higher, but it rains very regularly and the rains can be very heavy in July and August.
If you go to the far north of the country to visit the Sapa region, bring warm clothing, as temperatures can hover around 5-15 degrees between December and February.
Do I need a visa to visit Vietnam ?
It depends on the length of your stay. For British citizens, you don’t need a visa for a trip of less than 45 days and if your passport is valid for more than 6 months. If you wish to stay longer, or if your passport is not valid for more than 6 months, you will need an e-Visa, which is generally obtained within 1 month.
For US citizens, you need a passport valid for more than 6 months and a visa, no matter how long your stay !
Where can I buy a plane ticket ?

What’s the budget for 10 days in Vietnam ?
- Flights France – Vietnam : €800 per person on average.
- Hotels : it depends on where and what category. However, allow €50 on average (between €20 and €80 per night for a 3-star or even 4-star hotel, depending on the location).
- Restaurants : as with hotels, prices vary widely according to category. Expect to pay €20 per person per day for 2 meals. But it is clearly possible to spend as little as €5-10 a day eating at local restaurants.
Total = €2,100 for a 10-day stay in Vietnam, i.e. €1,050 per person. Excluding activities / visits / excluding local transport.
How do you get internet on your phone in Vietnam ?
Vietnam is one of those countries where you shouldn’t plan a package or SIM card before you go, as the packages sold locally are ridiculously cheap. I picked up a SIM card at the airport when I arrived and paid around €8 for 4 weeks with unlimited data.
How do you get around in Vietnam ?
- In the big cities, I recommend you take a taxi (very cheap). If you don’t want to get ripped off, download the Grab application. Otherwise, make sure you take a “Taxi Meter”, which keeps the meter running.
- In smaller towns or on islands, I strongly recommend hiring a scooter (approximately €6 per day).
